Peace process will herald era of friendship: Mufti
by Yusuf Jameel

New Delhi, India
25 February 2004
Jammu: Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mufti Muhammad Sayeed on Monday expressed optimism that what he called the gaining momentum in the ongoing process of peace and reconciliation would herald a new era of Indo-Pak friendship, minor aberrations notwithstanding.
In an hour-long reply to the discussion on demands of grants for the departments under his charge in the Legislative Assembly here, the chief minister said nothing could stop the peace movement as it has the support of the people of both the nations.
Maintaining that the process is already showing discernible signs of its impact in the region, Mr Sayeed made a pointed reference to the recent public statement of Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf about not allowing Pakistani soil for terror acts and his advice to militants to surrender or leave that country.
He said, 'Those garnering support from across the border for violence must comprehend the signals about futility of gun. This is the change in the situation which nobody can deny.'
Mr Sayeed asked who could have ever thought of the people reaching on both sides of the river Kishenganga (known as Neelam across the de facto border that separates Kashmir) even for 2-3 days to meet their relatives and friends. . . .
He asserted that a positive attitudinal shift has taken place in search operations. He cited the example of taking on two holed up fidayeen at a shopping mall opposite his official residence in Srinagar last year in which the forces 'demonstrated immense degree of patience to prevent loss of human lives and collateral damage to the property.'
He said,'Restrain has been made watch word for the forces.' . . .
